How to Sew a Roll Pillow

Whether traveling or at home, roll pillows are a great place to rest your head. They can offer great neck or back support when sitting. Using scrap fabric from an old pillow case or bed sheet, you can make one or several. Making a roll pillow for yourself also allows you to choose the level of the pillow's firmness. You can hand sew a roll pillow or use a machine, but regardless of the method you choose, making a roll pillow is basic and fun.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your fabric. Depending on the size of your roll pillow, you will need between about half a yard of fabric. This much fabric will give you a roll pillow about 18 inches long. For a larger roll pillow, increase the amount of fabric.

    • 2

Consider how wide you want your roll pillow to be. It may be best to stick to the same size as its length and add an inch for seam allowance. For example, if your pillow is 18 inches long, cut out an 18 x 19 piece.

    • 3

Cut your fabric. You will need the one large rectangular piece and two circles. The circles' diameter should be the same as the longest side on the rectangular piece. An 18 inch long pillow with a 19 inch side will require two 19 inch wide circles.

    • 4

Pin and sew the rectangular piece into a tube leaving a 1/2 inch seam allowance on each side with the right sides together.

    • 5

Flip the tube inside out, and right sides together, baste one circle to a side, making sure to clip the edges for a smooth fit and leaving a 1/2 seam allowance.

    • 6

Sew the circle piece to one side along the basted edge.

    • 7

Pin and baste half of the circle with the tube still flipped inside out, once again clipping the edges of the circle to fit. Make sure to leave enough room to put in stuffing.

    • 8

Fill the roll pillow with the stuffing. Adjust the stuffing and sew the remaining half of the circle from the outside.
