A curling iron can instantly give your hair body and curl. However, improper use of a curling iron can result in burned tresses. Applying excessive heat to your hair can make it dry and brittle and your hair can break and the ends can split. Additionally, you may end up with hair that smells burned. To avoid this, use the correct styling products and learn how to properly use your curling iron.

Avoid using your curling iron on wet hair as this will result in fried strands that lack moisture. Always use your curling iron on hair that's completely dry.

Wipe a damp towel over the barrel of the curling iron before and after each use. Product residue on the barrel can interfere with the curling process and can result in burned hair.

Apply a heat-protecting spray to your hair to protect it from heat damage. Use a spray that has a nice smell to it. Allow it to dry on your hair before using your curling iron.

Set your curling iron to the lowest possible setting that will still give you the desired curling effect. Leave the iron in your hair for no more than 10 seconds before removing it. Avoid leaving the curling iron in your hair for too long, because this may burn it

Apply a nice-smelling hairspray to your hair to hold it in place or spray an alcohol-free hair perfume in the scent of your choice, over your tresses. Hair perfume masks any unpleasant smells and won't dry out your hair.
