There are times when you may want to change or replace an electrical outlet. Its not very difficult if you take your time and proceed safely. By doing it yourself, you will save the cost of an electrician and have the pride and sense of accomplishment that you did it yourself.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First find the circuit breaker or fuse that powers the electrical outlet. If you are not sure which circuit breaker or fuse turns off the electrical outlet, try plugging in a radio. Turn the radio on loud enough that you can hear it and then turn off the circuit breaker or fuses one by one until the radio is no longer heard.

  2. Step 2

Now that the power is off, remove the cover plate by unscrewing the center screw. With the plate removed, remove the outlet from the wall by unscrewing the two screws on either side of the electrical outlet.

  3. Step 3

Once the screws are removed, gently pull the electric outlet from the wall. You should notice two wires on the electrical outlet, one on the top and one on the bottom. NOTE: Before removing the wires, pay close attention to the color of the wires. Usually there will be a white wire and another colored wire.

  4. Step 4

Now remove the wires, one at a time from the old electrical outlet. When both wires are disconnected, discard the old electrical outlet and get ready to install the new electrical outlet.

  5. Step 5

Place the white wire under the silver screw of the electrical outlet and tighten. Next place the colored wire under the gold screw of the electrical outlet and tighten. Finally, place a couple wraps of electrical tape around the electrical outlet covering the screws. Screw the new electrical outlet in the wall and replace the cover plate. Turn the circuit breaker or fuse back on and test the outlet.
