The ScanDisk function has changed from earlier versions of Microsoft products. We refer to the process as simply error-checking a hard drive on a computer. It's relatively easy to do and it's something you want to do often to maintain the optimum operating function of your computer. If there's a problem, this function will find it and walk you through the steps to correct it.

Instructions

    • 1
      Start > My Computer.

Select "My Computer" either from the Start button or the icon on your desktop.

    • 2

Select the Hard Disk Drive on which you want to perform the ScanDisk function by right-clicking on it to highlight it. This will bring up another menu. You can do this multiple times to look over any of your hard drives. Most people have Disk C as the main drive and would probably start there.

    • 3
      Properties of your hard drive.

Scroll down to the bottom of this pop-up menu. Select "Properties."

    • 4
      Check now.

Click on the "Tools" tab. From there click the "Check Now" button under "This option will now check the volume for errors." This is the ScanDisk function in Windows XP.

Tips & Warnings

  • This process can take a very long time. Be prepared for this. You will not be able to use your computer for other functions while the ScanDisk function is working.
