How to Apply Smokey Eye Shadow
Smoky eye shadow is a popular evening look and has been making waves on the red carpet for years. To get this look it's important to stick with blacks, grays and browns instead of heading into blue territory. If you must have some color on your face, go for ones that are as dark as possible. That way they will appear to be black except for under close inspection and can still bring out your eye color. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Use a makeup sponge to apply a small amount of foundation or cream concealer to your eyelid and the area between your lid and eyebrow. That way your eye shadow can go on smoothly.
-
2
Line your eyes with dark eyeliner by using your pencil to outline the skin directly above your top lashes. Close your eye and gently apply the liner in between your lower lashes to give them the dark look without being too overpowering. Use a cotton swab to blend the color into your skin.

Apply your eye shadow with a makeup brush. Cover your entire eyelid, all the way up to the crease between your eyelid and brow bone. Use a tissue, cotton swab or sponge to blend the color, pushing it upward toward your brow. Stop about a quarter inch below your actual eyebrow or you will lose all definition in your face.

Add a lighter shade of powder eye shadow, such as gold or ivory, right on top of your brow bone to further define the space between your shadow and your eyebrow. Cover your lashes with dark mascara, either a jet black or dark brown. Let the first coat dry and then apply a second coat. Skip the eyelash curler or your look may be overly dramatic.

Check your results in a makeup mirror. If you're happy with your look, repeat steps one through four for the other eye. If not, wash your face with makeup remover and try again.

Tips & Warnings
Err on the side of caution. It's easier to apply more eye shadow if you don't have enough on than to take it off and start all over. Wash and dry your face before you get started. You don't want oil and dirt trapped underneath your heavy makeup. Give yourself some extra time the first time you try to achieve this look. It will get easier with practice.
Reserve this look for going out at night. It is too dramatic for a daytime look and definitely not appropriate for wearing to the office.
