Compared to other types of fishing reels, the bait-casting reel is relatively new to the sport fishing world. Whereas a traditional spinning reel revolves horizontally, a bait-casting reel turns vertically. The theory behind a bait-cast reel is that the fishing lure or bait will travel farther because the line comes off the reel straight through the rod guides, avoiding the 90-degree angle the string must travel to enter the guides of a traditional spinning reel. Follow a few steps to put fishing line on a bait-casting reel.

Locate the rod guides that run along the length of the fishing pole. The rod guides look like small circles or ovals.

Insert the line through the line guide located at the end of the reel after threading the new fishing line through all of the rod guides.

Cut the line between the rod tip and the new line spool when the reel is full of new line.
