How to Choose Compression Socks

Compression socks are long, stretchy, washable footwear used to improve the circulation in the legs. They are designed to provide the most pressure at the ankles. The pressure is reduced in the upper parts of compression socks. This product isn't "one size fits all."

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the circumference of the calf of one of your legs. This will determine the size of the compression socks you'll need. The sizes available generally run from "small" (up to 12 inches) all the way to "XXX large" (up to 21 inches), depending on the manufacturer.

  2. Step 2

Determine how much support your legs need. Consult with your health care professional so you can correctly choose what's right for you. She may even give you a prescription. Many brands of compression socks don't allow you to choose how much support they provide; if you choose these they may be too restrictive on your legs. You want compression socks that feel supportive, yet are comfortable. The better brands are available in "Moderate" and "Firm" support.

  3. Step 3

Shop online or in local drug stores for compression socks. Dr. Leonard's and AmericaRx are both reputable, online discount health care retailers (see Resources). Order the right size, as well as the correct level of support, for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Periodically check your compression socks and pull them up or straighten the wrinkles out of them. Wear your compression socks all day to provide beneficial support for your legs. Take them off before you go to bed at night. Just like ordinary socks, compression socks are available in men's and women's. Note that colors are usually limited to tan, black, white and navy blue.
  • Talk to your health care professional if you're experiencing unexplained pain, tiredness, swelling or other discomfort in your legs. Read and follow any instructions that come with the compression socks. Or follow your doctor's directions about wearing them.
