Locate any documentation to back up your claim. Whether you have hard copies of your banking or credit card statements or electronic copies, make sure you have documented proof that the credit report is incorrect.

Contact the credit reporting agency. It's best to put everything in writing in the form of a letter to the credit reporting agencies. You can do this for free and it's the best way to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Along with your letter, include copies of documents that substantiate your claim to fix the credit report.

Append your letter to your credit report. If the credit reporting agency does not agree with your claim, request that they append your letter to your credit report.
