Preparing for Navy Basic Training
"Honor, Courage and Commitment" are the core values of the United States Navy. The Navy defends our country on land, sea and air. Basic training is the first step in your new military career. Life as you know it will change forever but these following tips may make the transition a little easier.

1
Prepare your body. The Navy has cracked down on physical fitness and it will be easier going if you are already in shape. Running, sit-ups, push-ups, crunches and stretching are some basics to start with.
-
2
Prepare your mind. While much of your time will be spent out in the field, there will be classroom time. There are countless pieces of information that you will have to memorize before graduation. Study your manual before leaving for basic and you will have more free time during it.

3
Prepare your emotions. Basic training is not like summer camp. You will need to prepare yourself for the assault that your character and spirit are going to take. Your instructors are there to push you to your limit. In your weeks of training, you will be screamed at, swore at, insulted, and humiliated. Homesickness will begin to creep in. Spend plenty of time with family and loved ones before you leave and understand that basic is only a temporary hell to see if you have what it takes to be sailor.
-
4
Increase your tolerance. In basic training you will feel pain like you never felt before. While training ahead of time helps, nothing can actually compare to the rigors of basic training. Practice running in military boots or marching through the woods wearing a heavy pack. Condition your body for the changes in sleep patterns by getting up at 4 o'clock in the morning and understand that you may not always get a full night of sleep. The more you put your body through now, the less you're likely to notice it during basic.
-
5
Organize your life. While you are away starting your military life, civilian life goes on. Make sure that before you leave all of your affairs are in order. Your pay will be direct deposited so make sure you have a checking account for that. Everyday things like paying bills and feeding pets will need to be taken care of while you are gone.

Pack. Do not leave packing till the last minute. Only pack what is on the list that your recruiter gives you. Remember any and all important documents that you need for in-processing.

Tips & Warnings
Hair must be shorter than collar length so it is a good idea for female recruits to have their hair cut before they leave. The "salons" at basic aren't known for their hairstyling. Quit smoking, if you do.
Don't overtrain. An injury is not a good thing before you leave. A serious injury may delay your departure.
