An iPod is essentially useless directly out of the box. In order for it to play your music and videos, it must first be charged and then synced with a computer. The battery in the iPod Nano can be charged either from a wall outlet or the USB port of a computer. Syncing the iPod Nano also takes place through a USB port, which allows the device to connect to your computer, as long as it has the iTunes program installed on it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • iPod Nano
  • Mac or PC computer
  • iPod USB cable
  • iPod wall charger (optional)
  1. Step 1

Plug the wider end of the iPod USB cable into the bottom syncing port of the iPod Nano.

  2. Step 2

Insert the narrower end of the iPod USB cable into any free USB port on your computer.

  3. Step 3

Open the iTunes application by clicking on the Dock icon on a Mac or using the Start menu on a PC.

  4. Step 4

Click on the iPod Nano icon under the "Devices" heading on the left side of the iTunes window.

  5. Step 5

Click on the "Sync" button in the lower-right corner of the screen to transfer your music library and other files to your iPod Nano. When you receive confirmation of the transfer from iTunes, it means your iPod Nano has been successfully synced with your computer.

  6. Step 6

Unplug the iPod USB cable from the computer and connect it to the iPod wall adapter. Then connect the adapter to any standard electrical outlet, and your iPod Nano will begin to charge. Optionally, you can leave your iPod plugged in to your computer, and it will charge its battery using the computer's power source.

Tips & Warnings
  • iPod Nano battery charging can take from 1-3 hours depending on the battery's health and previous charge capacity.
  • Charging an iPod through a laptop computer can severely drain the laptop's battery.
