How to Change the Ringtone on a Blackberry Storm

The BlackBerry brand of smartphone handles ringtones differently than other phones. While general purpose handsets generally have a subscription service that allows you to purchase "premium" ringtones every month using a phone application, the BlackBerry interface lets you find your own ringtones. There is no bundled application, which may be a little bit of a bother to some initially, but you will find that it makes finding and installing ringtones much easier in the long run, as any audio file can be used as a ringtone.

Instructions

1. Click on the BlackBerry menu button at the bottom of the phone. This will bring up a list of application and settings icons.

2. Click on the media icon with your finger to open up the media center. Find the ringtone icon and then click on it to see a list of available tones. You can preview them with a single touch, or set them by pulling up the settings menu.

3. Set individual tones. If you want to use different ringtones for different people, go to your address book (accessible via the main menu) and tap on the listing of the person you want to have a specific ringtone. Pull up the Edit menu and then tap on "Add Custom Ringtone" to set the new ringtone.

4. Make your own ringtone. If you are unhappy with the ringtone options that come standard on your BlackBerry Storm, you can transform any song or sound effect that you have downloaded to your device into a ringtone by entering the media center, pulling up the menu, and then clicking on the "Set as Ringtone" option.

Tips & Warnings

• You can also share ringtones with other BlackBerry users by attaching song or ringtone files to email messages. When the recipient gets the message, all he has to do is save the attachment in his Ringtones folder, located in the BlackBerry Storm's media section, to use your ringtone.
• If you are a ringtone aficionado it is a good idea to create a separate ringtone folder on a micro SD card and keep it in your phone's expansion port.
