How to Use a Sunbeam Rice Cooker
There are many small kitchen appliances that make cooking easier. There are electric blenders, mixers, juicers and bread makers. There are also rice cookers that will cook the rice while you attend to other tasks in the kitchen. When the rice is finished cooking, the cooker can keep it warm until you are ready to serve it. Sunbeam rice cookers come in a variety of sizes: Some will make just enough rice for a small family, and other, larger cookers will prepare enough for a banquet. Some models will simply turn off when the rice has finished cooking, while others will switch to a holding setting, keeping the food warm. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Open the lid and remove the inner pan. Rice cookers include the cooker, a lid, a cord and an inner pan where the rice and water are placed for cooking. It is important not to scratch the surface of the inner pan. A special rice paddle or wooden spoon should be used when removing the cooked rice.
-
2
Measure the rice to be cooked into the inner pan. Before measuring, you will need to determine your rice cooker's size, and how many cups of rice you can cook at one time in that particular model. You can cook short-grain, long-grain, wild and even brown rice in the cooker. Yet the proportion of water to rice will depend on the type of rice you are cooking. White short-grain rice might take 2 cups of water for every 2 cups of rice, while brown rice might require 2-½ cups of water to 2 cups of rice. Read the directions on the package of rice you are using.

Rinse the rice before adding the water. Some people like to rinse the rice, to remove some of the starch, before cooking. This is done by simply filling the pan with tap water after the rice has been added, swirling the water around the pan, then draining out the liquid. Some cooks never rinse their rice.
-
4
Measure and add water to the pan of rice. Refer to the instructions on the rice package or the menu section that comes with the rice cooker. If the rice is a little hard, add more water the next time.
-
5
Place the inner pan in the rice cooker; close the lid and plug the cord from the cooker into the electrical outlet.
-
6
Look at the front of the cooker. Depending on the model, there may be two lights. One light indicates when the rice is cooking, and the other light will indicate when the rice is warming. When the rice is finished cooking the cooking light will turn off and the second light will turn on. On some models, the second light is a manual switch, and will not automatically turn on. It will be the cook's job to turn on the warmer when the cooking light shuts off.
-
7
Push the lever to turn on the rice cooker. The light that indicates the rice is cooking will turn on.
-
8
Turn on the warmer (if it does not automatically turn on) after the rice finishes cooking. Allow the rice to sit for at least 10 minutes after it has finished cooking before you serve it.
