Things You'll Need:
- Model truck kit
- Model glue
- Clean workspace
- Paint
- Sandpaper
-
Step 1
Purchase the model pickup that you would like to put together. You can purchase these type of kits on eBay, model stores online or even at your local department stores and hobby shops. There will be a couple of different factors that will help you pick out the model truck you would like to build. One is your skill level. If you are just starting out, you want to get something simple or perhaps even purchase a snap-tight model that doesn't use glue. Secondly, your budget will be a factor in picking the type of model you build.
-
Step 2
Clean a place off to build your model and to allow the glue to air dry. A dry basement or garage is the perfect ideal place to build your model truck. You'll want to make sure that the model is not in the way of normal activities and that it is in a dry environment. Clear off an old table and make sure that you have all the needed tools organized and within easy reach of your work station.
-
Step 3
Wash all the sprues thoroughly with soap and water. The sprues are the plastic frames that have all the parts attached to them. Washing them in soap and water will help remove any dust and grime off the parts that may prevent your model from drying properly.
-
Step 4
Use a knife and carefully cut each of the pieces away from the sprues and organize them by tires and wheel parts, engine parts and chassis parts, for example. This will help you to stay organized and prevent you from losing parts.
-
Step 5
Take all of the parts of the engine block and paint them a chrome color. Make sure that you get all the areas of the parts painted evenly. You want to do this before gluing the engine block together because it is nearly impossible to paint all the intricate parts once they are glued together.
-
Step 6
Glue the engine block together. Take each piece, place glue on the pegs and in the holes, and press the pieces together. Hold the pieces together for a few seconds to let the glue bond.
-
Step 7
Paint all the interior pieces the color of your choice. Take a small paint brush and carefully paint the steering wheel, the seats, and the dashboard the color you would like your truck's interior to be.
-
Step 8
Paint the chassis of the truck. Carefully paint the bottom and top chassis the color of your choice and make sure the paint covers the entire truck. Also, after you have painted the truck, you may want to cover it in a coat of gloss to make it shine.
-
Step 9
Glue the engine block and the interior pieces on to the truck's bottom chassis. Locate the proper marks and glue the pieces in place and make sure to secure them until they are stuck together.
-
Step 10
Install all the windows in their proper location. If the window pieces have any excess bits of plastic, carefully sand them off with sandpaper.
-
Step 11
Put together the wheels, attach the axles to the chassis, and glue in place. Once you have the wheels glued on, your model pickup is finished and ready for display.
