Fiberglass bathtubs are really not difficult to clean and maintain when done properly. Fiberglass does not require expensive and possibly hazardous specialty cleaners, and you will probably find that some common household items work the best. However, improper cleaning may permanently harm the surface and make a clean, sparkling look impossible. It's also important to remember to clean the bathtub on a regular basis to prevent soap scum and body-oil buildup.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Distilled white vinegar
  • 1 spray bottle
  • 1 soft polish cloth
  • 1 soft nonabrasive sponge
  • A mild, soft-scrub, nonabrasive cleanser
  • 1 bleach stick
  1. Step 1

Fill a plastic spray bottle with a mixture of 1 cup of white vinegar to 1 gallon of water. Spray the surface of the tub. Let the vinegar solution set for five minutes and rinse.

  2. Step 2

Check for stains not removed by the vinegar. Remove these stains, such as heavy buildup of soap scum and body oil on the floor of the tub, by lining the bottom of the tub with two layers of paper towels and soaking with a one-to-one solution of vinegar and water. Keeping the paper towels moist, allow the vinegar and water solution to stand for an hour and then dispose of the paper towels and wipe clean.

  3. Step 3

Use soft, nonabrasive cleanser with a nonabrasive sponge on any stubborn stains. Rinse and polish.

  4. Step 4

Clean any mildew from the grout with a bleach stick. This step may need to be repeated depending on the severity of the mildew.

  5. Step 5

Rinse the tub thoroughly with clear, hot water, and then dry the tub with a clean, soft polish cloth.

  6. Step 6

Spray vinegar solution onto the hardware and wipe dry for a sparkling look. If calcium deposits are heavy, you may need to put some undiluted vinegar in a plastic bag and tie it to the faucet with a rubber band. Allow the vinegar to work for about an hour, and then rinse with hot water and polish with a polish cloth.

Tips & Warnings
  • These same cleaning instructions also apply to any fiberglass surface in your kitchen or bathroom.
  • Do not use harsh abrasive products on fiberglass, as they will permanently scratch the surface.
