A common material most often used for highly practical pursuits, rope can also be decorative. In homes, rope is used to add drama to window dressings, bed curtains, pillows and tapestries. Lightweight cotton rope is not only used to embellish home furnishings, however. Rope trim and jewelry shows up on the fashion runway often. From necklaces and bracelets to belts and headdresses, rope jewelry makes a bold and stunning statement. Rope is easy to shape, takes color well and can be decorated with a variety of wire, beads and charms. To make your own rope jewelry, complete the following instructions for a linked rope chain.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lightweight cotton rope
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Wax paper
  • White glue
  • Acrylic paint

    Preparation

  1. Step 1

Cut several pieces of rope to the length you wish your links to be. The longer the rope pieces, the bigger the links. You will need different lengths and link amounts depending on the type of jewelry you are making.

  2. Step 2

Thread the needle with wire twice the length of your links and fold it over.

  3. Step 3

Run the needle through one of the rope links lengthwise until wire pokes out both ends.

  4. Step 4

Remove the needle and twist the two wire ends together to form a link. Clip away the extra wire with wire cutters and adjust the rope to hide the rest of the wire.

  5. Step 5

Repeat steps 2 to 4 for the rest of the links, looping each piece of rope through the previous completed link before twisting the wire closed.

  6. Decoration

  7. Step 1

Create a mixture of glue and acrylic paint, enough to cover your rope jewelry and achieve the color you like. Add a little water to thin out the mixture.

  8. Step 2

Dip the rope jewelry into the mixture until completely covered. Remove and lay the rope jewelry out on wax paper.

  9. Step 3

Wipe or clean off any excess glue from so it won't harden onto the design. Make sure that the jewelry is in a shape you like.

  10. Step 4

Let the rope jewelry dry completely.

  11. Step 5

Cover any frayed or unattractive edges with wire, winding it around the rope. If desired, add beads to the wire.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wire can be added in any place for decoration. Choose a gold, silver or nickel wire depending on your preference and use it to wind or loop around the rope. Beads and charms can be strung through the wire to sit tightly or dangle. For extra visual interest, attach ribbons and other trim to the needle and run it through parts of the rope. Rope jewelry can also be formed into knots, loops and twisted bundles. Experiment with different rope thicknesses to find the best rope for the style you would like to create.
