How to Handle Conflict With Your Boss

Work is stressful, but it can be far more stressful when you don't get along with your supervisor. Here are some simple ways to approach conflict and tension within the workplace.

1. Stay calm. The last thing you want to do is start yelling or crying. This seems so obvious, but it can be hard not to get riled up in such a frustrating situation. Make sure that you have a hold on your emotions before you attempt any sensitive conversations with your boss as you want to come across as cool and collected.

2. Pull together a case to present to your boss. They probably have many other things to deal with so be sure that you are fully prepared to discuss the issue at hand before even stepping into their office. You want to be composed, organized, and logical in your approach so that you can swing the situation in your favor.

3. Take notes that you can refer to in the middle of the meeting should you suddenly lose your train of thought. It can be intimidating to be one on one with your boss; taking notes can prevent you from leaving the office forgetting something important that you wish you would have mentioned.

4. Research your options and rights as an employee. It is smart to be aware of the actions you are allowed to take in the case of a conflict, whether it be between you and your boss or another coworker.

5. Follow up. Whatever the issue is, you can probably guarantee that the boss is done worrying about it long before you are. That's why it is important that you remind them if the issue is not resolved quickly.
