Step 1
Make sure you have a steady heat supply. When the electric goes out so does your electric heat. There are several back ups available like a clean burning kerosene heater, propane or LP fireplace / heater, or wood burning fireplace. Make the most of the heat you are able to produce by blocking off rooms that aren't needed. You should safely be able to live out of a single room and a restroom.

Step 2
Water is essential to life. Make sure your pipes don't freeze up by leaving your water running slowly. A slow drip will still freeze, but a slow run will resist freezing more. Keep a supply of bottled water on stock.
-
Step 3
Hot food would be great, but that's hard to do without electricity unless you have a gas cooking stove. So, if you have an electric cook stove, keep plenty of gas in your bar-b-q grill tank or make sure you have lots of snack bars, jerky, and dried fruits on hand. Store enough supplies to get your family through at least 20 - 30 days of a power outage.
-
Step 4
Bed, Bath, and Beyond hand crank radio and flashlight.Lastly, make sure you have a kerosene lantern or hand powered lantern to provide light. Candles work great and provide heat to keep your hands warm. Don't forget the matches or a lighter! A hand crank or battery powered radio is a great item to have also. It will allow you to stay in touch with weather reports, news, and information on the power outage.
