Even though sushi chefs spend years to perfect their sushi rice, you can still make absolutely delicious sushi in your own home!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rolling mat/Makisu (wrapped in cellophane)
  • Seaweed paper/Nori
  • Sushi rice
  • Rice wine vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Avocado
  • Cucumber
  • Carrots
  • Sharp knife
  1. Step 1

To make the rice, you will need to buy sushi rice at the supermarket or Asian food store and rinse it thoroughly. Wash 1 cup of rice until the water is clear. Let this sit for about 15 minutes to completely drain.

  2. Step 2

While the rice is draining, put 6 tablespoons of rice vinegar, 5 tablespoons of sugar, and 3 teaspoons of salt on a pan on medium heat. Heat until the sugar has dissolved.

  3. Step 3

Now cook your rice in a rice cooker or pot, the way you would normally cook rice.

  4. Step 4

Combine your vinegar mixture with the rice until the rice is fully coated.

  5. Step 5

Lay your seaweed paper on your sushi mat. Place your sushi rice on the seaweed, right to the edges. Then flip it over. Place your avocado strips, cucumber strips, and carrot strips on the seaweed. Take the edge of your mat and tightly roll it up. When you have completely rolled it up, take your sharp knife, dip it in water, and slice it into 6 even sushi rolls.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dip your fingers in water so it does not stick to the rice
  • Place cellophane around your sushi mat so it's easier to clean up
