Step 1
Finding a perfect spot. It is important to choose a safe, active, and legal spot to try ghost hunting. Local cemeteries or friend's houses are always a good destination, but do a search online for local haunted areas. Remember spirits are not always trapped in cliche locations. I have had luck in underpasses, picnic shelters, wooded areas, roads, etc. Make sure you do not trespass after hours, and scout the area out first in the daylight to see if anything hazardous could be a problem at night. Never risk safety.

Step 2
Choose your equipment. It's cheap and easy to go ghost hunting your first several times. If you simply want to try it out or do it for personal reasons, you really don't need fancy equipment you see on television. Most people have digital cameras, if you have one with a video recorder built in, all the better.
Video camera- It is a lot more fun to record your trip, even if nothing paranormal turns up, you can review your expedition and see what you did wrong and right! Look closely and listen closely at your footage. EVPs (electronic voice phenomenon) can show up at any time.
Voice recorder- These are nice too, you can ask questions and record to see if any spirits would rather talk than show up on camera! -
Step 3
How to go about finding your ghost- Firstly, never wear anything reflective, noisy, or cologne. When picture taking, filming, and recording, items you wear can confuse you (cologne) or show up on the film and camera that are not even paranormal. It is best to wear dark colors, nothing that smells, or jewelry that can be bright or noisy. Keep cell phones on silent and put away, don't smoke, and be as calm and quiet as possible.
Talking to ghosts- if you want to get responses on your voice recorder or camcorder, talk to the ghosts, always assume they are present, never ask them if they are there. It's always best to just act like they are surrounding you constantly. IF you feel safe enough to provoke the spirits, try to poke fun at it, or question its ability to show itself. Do not push your luck if you feel uneasy about the spiritual activity. If you feel as if you are not in a safe place spiritually, just leave. Ask the spirit questions, record everything, give it about 5 to 6 seconds to respond and keep talking. Stay in one place for a while then move on. Do not separate from your group. -
Step 4
Intuition- stick to your gut, if you have a sensitive side, do not feel embarrassed to go with what you're sensing. Imagine yourself surrounded by a while, strong, good light. Keep yourself from being negative and bringing negativity to the group and space you're in- keep yourself calm and organized. It can be scary, so leave if it is too much for you to handle. HAVE FUN!
