Does your apple pie need a crumb topping? or how about that coffee cake you like? This streusel topping is easy to make and is the perfect answer to making your pies and cakes go from ordinary to spectacular.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/3 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 & 1/2 TBSP chilled butter cut into pieces
  1. Step 1

Step one: spoon the all purpose flour into a dry 1/3 cup measuring cup and level off with a knife.

  2. Step 2

Step two: combine the 1/3 cup of flour with the 1/3 cup packed brown sugar and the 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon in a medium size mixing bowl.

  3. Step 3

Step three: take the 2 & 1/2 TBSP of chilled butter that's been cut into pieces and add to ingredients in the mixing bowl. Cut the butter into the mixture using either a pastry blender. If you don't have a pastry blender you can use 2 knives to cut the butter into the mixture or a fork. Keep cutting butter into the mixture until the texture is mixed but still on the coarse side.

  4. Step 4

Once this is completed you can put the mixture in the refrigerator until the pie or coffee cake is ready for the oven.

  5. Step 5

The next step is to sprinkle the mixture over your apple pie or coffee cake (or bundt cake) and then bake as you would for the pie or cake.

Tips & Warnings
  • usually the streusel topping takes the place of the top pie crust and is baked right on top of the apples
  • if you are making a coffee cake or bundt cake the topping is sprinkled on top of the batter and then baked according to directions for the size of the cake pan.
