Dirt resides almost undetectably on paint and wallpaper, until suddenly it's not so undetectable anymore. Here's how to make short work of the buildup.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bucket
  • sponge
  • Woolite or dishwashing liquid
  1. Step 1

First, you should check your wall surface to be sure there are no special instructions from the manufacturer (see warnings for more information) Fill your bucket with plain lukewarm water to clean your sponge as you go. In a spray bottle, mix 20 ounces of water and a tablespoon or so of Woolite or dishwashing liquid.

  2. Step 2

Working in small sections and wiping off drips as you go, spray the solution on spots and let it sit for 5 minutes. Allowing spray to sit on stains this way allows you to use less product.

  3. Step 3

Wipe each section with a damp, not wet, sponge. Rinse and wring the sponge frequently, so you don't spread dirty water back onto your clean walls. And that's all there is to it!

Tips & Warnings
  • It's always best to test this method on an out-of-the-way spot first, just in case your paint is sensitive to the cleaner you use.
  • Flat emulsion paint can be damaged by water. If you walls use this kind of paint you are better off using a dry sponge.
  • Vintage or antique wallpapers may also be damaged by this method, check with the manufacturer.
