Find a plastic tub that has an attractive color that will transmit some light. White, gray, light blue and pink are good choices. Make certain that your litter box fits into the plastic tub with enough vertical clearance for your cat to be comfortable. If you would like to keep your litter scoop in the box, make sure there's enough room.

  2. Step 2
Draw a hole on the lid.

Draw a hole on the lid.

Trace a circle big enough for your cat to be willing to enter into the top of the box. Anywhere near the middle will work. You can trace a plate to make it perfectly round.

  3. Step 3
    Safely cut the hole.

Carefully cut the circle out using a tool that you feel safe with. Do not use a utility knife or box cutter as they can snag and lead to severe cuts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use sand paper or an emery board to smooth the edge of the hole.
  • Introduce your cat to the box without the lid for a week.
  • Don't change litter if you are pregnant.
  • Careful not to cut yourself.
  • Make sure the hold is big enough for your cat to enter and leave freely.
  • Find a carpet remnant and fit it to the top of the box by trimming and cutting a hole in it. this will collect stray litter.
  • Blades can be dangerous. Be careful cutting the lid.
  • Make sure your cat has a quiet place without the harassment of dogs to explore the new potty.
