Easy Step by Step instructions to re-do old lawn furniture, and Vinyl Chairs.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Steel Wool.
  • all weather spray paint in color and finish of choice (Rustolium type)
  • water.
  • wash cloth
  • bucket, at least 1 gallon.
  • drying cloth
  • work area.
  • work gloves.
  • cheap dish soap.
  1. Step 1

Take vinyl chair out to safe work area. Mix soap and water in bucket. Work area will have paint on it when you are done. If you do not want paint on the work area, use a painters tarp.

  2. Step 2

Wash chair with soap and water. This removes the dirt and grime from the surface.

  3. Step 3

Rinse, then using steel wool, rub down all surfaces. This should create a non-glossed texture. This helps the paint adhere.

  4. Step 4

Rinse chair well. Use cloth and dry, or set overnight to dry.

  5. Step 5

Once chair is completely dry, spray with spray paint. To coat evenly, keep nozzle of spray can recommended distance from the surface, and try and paint slats and arms in as few strokes as possible. Usually, starting with the hidden surfaces (under arms, and below the seat) allow you to practice with the spray can for a more professional top appearance.

  6. Step 6

Wait for chair to fully dry, then add a second coat. Be certain to angle shots and coat entire surface, even those not seen from the top of the chair.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are changing color drastically, i.e. going from white to dark, or going from black to white, or you are painting over or with red, putting an undercoat of primer from the same company that made the top coat color you will apply will help significantly. There are special primers for red paint.
  • Matte finishes will appear rough.
  • Using a brush will leave a texture on most smaller objects. Unless a texture is desired don't attempt.
  • Plan on re-coating the chair once a year with the top coat color.
