Grilled Cheese

A gourmet grilled cheese takes the traditional grilled cheese and adds flavor and substance. If you are looking for a grown-up grilled cheese, this sandwich is the prefect choice.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stove top
  • Cast iron skillet or non-stick skillet
  • 2 slices of fresh ciabatta or French bread
  • 2 tablespoons of salted butter at room temperature
  • 2 slices of Smoked Gouda or Sharp Cheddar
  • Olive oil spray
  • Garlic powder
  • 1 slice of fresh tomato-optional
  • 1 slice of fresh sweet onion-optional
  1. Step 1

Prepare the food items. Slice the cheese to the desired thickness. Take a fresh tomato and onion and slice less than a quarter of an inch thick. Cut the bread length wise—make sure to have the top and bottom piece equal in size and proportion.

  2. Step 2

Preheat your skillet on the stove to 325 degrees. Cast iron works best for an 'even' temperature but any non-stick skillet will suffice.

  3. Step 3

Line the warm skillet with a splash of olive oil spray.

  4. Step 4

Spread the butter on both sides of the bread. Place one slice on the skillet and the add the cheese, tomato and onion. Add the other slice to the top.

  5. Step 5

Sprinkle one side of the sandwich with garlic powder. Flip and repeat on the other side.

  6. Step 6

Brown the sandwich lightly until firm.

  7. Step 7

Remove from heat. Cut in a triangle and serve immediately.

  • This sandwich is perfect with homemade tomato or chicken noodle soup.
  • Mix and match cheeses for a unique taste.
