How to Fix Red Eye In Adobe Photoshop

When using the flash to take portrait photos, sometimes you'll get the dreaded red eye. Red eye happens when the lighting is incorrect and the camera lens can't process it correctly. Red eye in a photograph is easy to fix using Adobe Photoshop.

      Open the original picture with the red eye. With the image open, on the Tools palette, select the "Red Eye Removal Tool."

      Click in the center of the red portion of the eye that needs fixing. With one click, Adobe Photoshop will darken the eye while keeping the tone and texture of the eye.

      Save your fixed photo by using the "Save As..." option and give it a new name. This way you preserve your original image.

Tips & Warnings

  • Play with the settings until you get it just right.

  • Hit "Ctrl" and "+/-" to zoom in and out of your image quickly.

  • If you are not happy with the result, you can adjust the pupil size and darken pupil elements. Move the slider settings to the desired amount or type in the amount you want to adjust.

  • Red Eye Removal Tool only works with RGB or LAB color images. Red Eye Removal comes in CS3 and higher.
