How to Prepare a Flowerbed for Planting

Before you beginning planting flowers in a bed, it is nessary to get your flowerbed ready to help you plants grow to their potential

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Prepared area
  • Shovels
  • garden fork
  • Plants or seeds that you are planting in the area
  • Rake
  • Sand
  • Peat moss
  1. Step 1

    If you are planting in a new area, all turf needs to be removed and you are going to want to work up the area and depending on what type of soil you have you can ad nutrients to your soil and improve your soil texture

  2. Step 2

    When adding nutrients to your soil and provide your plants with good aeration you can mix sand, peat moss and or a good compost mixture. Covering the soil with a 2" layer of sand and a 2" layer of peat moss and or your compost mixture.

  3. Step 3

    After adding all, it needs to be worked into the ground, so with your shovel, garden fork or a tiller work mixture into the ground apx. 6" deep in the ground. You might want to use a tiller that would be the easiest and everything get mixed-up together very well and makes for nice fluffy soil for your plants to thrive in good aerated soil. Hopefully this help and your flower bed turns out beautiful

Tips & Warnings
  • Good aeration helps you get healthy plants.
  • If you are planting beds with new construction soil then this will help with the compacted soil and help your plants stretch their roots.
  • After planting your plants in the space you want them be sure to water them well until they are established
  • When working with a rototiller be sure you can man handle it, and use every safety precaution possible
