How to Build Motorcycle Wheel Chocks

When parking a motorcycle for an extended period of time, it seems that no matter what the location, or how good the kickstand is, bikes like to roll and fall over. To counter this problem, make yourself motorcycle wheel chocks. Slide the chocks in front of your motorcycle tires to brace the bike from sliding.

Things You'll Need

• 2 blocks of 1-by-1 square foot wood (alder preferably)
• Jigsaw with an extension
• Power sander
• Fine sandpaper
• Weatherproof wood varnish

Instructions

1. Attach the extension blade to your jigsaw. Square up the edges of the blocks, cutting off any uneven or jagged edges to make the block as close to a true cube as possible.

2. 

   Line up the blocks, facing squarely towards you. Begin a cut about an inch in from each upper corner. Angle this cut as near to a 45-degree angle as possible, and cut towards the center of the block. Make sure, however, to cut at least two-thirds of the way through the full block. This is where the tires will rest.

3. Round off all edges on the blocks, using a power sander. Wood slivers can actually puncture a motorcycle tire, so this step is very important in the construction of the chocks.

4. Sand the chocks using a piece of fine sandpaper. The smoother the chocks are, the better they will look.

5. Blow all the wood dust off the surface of the chocks,using an air compressor with a pointed tip. This is essential for getting a good finish.

6. Apply a standard, weatherproof wood varnish of your choice. This will keep them from splitting and give them a professional look.

7. Allow the chocks to dry overnight before using.

Tips & Warnings

• Draw outlines with a permanent marker on the wood before cutting. These will help you to make an accurate cut.

• Always use caution when working with power tools and sharp objects.
