Step 1
Find a pattern for your stained glass object. You can find a variety of free patterns for projects online, or you can make your own. Stained glass patterns have individual sections, separated by lines indicating where the solder lines will be in your finished project. Number the sections of your pattern consecutively and make a copy.
-
Step 2
Cut out the sections of your pattern. Place the cut pieces on top of the stained glass and trace around them with your grease pencil. Number each piece of the stained glass with the same number that is on the pattern. This will help you piece your pattern together when all of the glass is cut.
-
Step 3
Cut your stained glass into the designated pieces. Grind the edges until they are smooth. Remember to wear your gloves and eye protection as you grind the glass. It's possible to shatter the stained glass while you are grinding, even though the glass grinders use water during the process for protection. It's a good idea to practice your grinding technique before you grind your stained glass. Get the feel of the amount of pressure required and the best way to hold the glass while you grind it.
-
Step 4
Wrap copper tape around the edges of each cut, grinded piece of stained glass. Assemble your glass pieces to create your stained glass object. Metal or wooden trays are helpful for this part of the project.
-
Step 5
Coat one section of copper tape with flux. Solder the coated pieces together with your soldering iron. Continue to add flux and solder your stained glass object in small sections until the side that is facing you is completely soldered. Let it cool, and flip it over so you can repeat the soldering process on the back side.
