How to Dress Like Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash was a musical force. He mixed bluegrass, gospel, country, folk and rock into a tapestry of varied and texture sound. He created a style all his own. When it came to his style outside of music, he liked to keep it simple. He was nicknamed "The Man in Black" for a reason, after all. However, simply wearing black does not a convincing "Johnny Cash" make. With enough attention to detail, though, you can look the part. Of course, it won't be as easy to sing like Cash. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wear a black button-down shirt. It can be a plain, solid shirt or, if you want to get a bit more creative, it can be a cowboy-style shirt. If you don't have a black shirt, wear a white button-down with a black coat over it.

    • 2

Wear solid black pants. They should not be black jeans, but should be slacks instead.

    • 3

Wear black boots--preferably cowboy style boots, but it won't matter much as the pants will cover them.

    • 4

Slick your hair back and up, into a pompadour.

    • 5

Carry an acoustic guitar for a prop. It should be hung high up, closer to your chin than your waist, as this was the way Cash played.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're dressing like Cash for a Halloween party, and someone asks you who you're supposed to be, the correct answer is: "Hi, I'm Johnny Cash." (This is what he used to say onstage before beginning his performances.)
