Vinyl shutters are some of the least expensive additions that can be added to a home that increases the appearance and value. Adding shutters to a house makes it look more finished and beautiful. However, the vinyl shutters fade easily in the sun. The sun can cause the vinyl to fade, crack, and even break in places. After a few years, the vinyl shutters need to be replaced with new ones. Replacing vinyl shutters is one of the easiest home repair projects that can be completed.
Things You'll Need
- Cordless electric drill
- Extension ladder
- Screwdriver bits
- New vinyl shutters
- Measuring tape
- Dry or wet rag
Place the ladder right next to the shutter you are replacing. Remove the screws holding the shutter in place with the screwdriver. Put the screws in a pouch or other container.
Remove the shutter from the wall. Sometimes they get stuck, so you might have to tug on it a little. Once the shutter is removed, set it aside. Clean the area behind the shutter if there is any dirt or debris.
Measure the distance from the screw hole to the edge of the shutter on the old shutter. Measure the same distance on the new shutter and mark with a pencil. Do the same thing for as many holes as the old shutter had.
Drill a hole with the cordless drill in each place that you have marked with the pencil. Make sure to drill all the way through the shutters. Use a small bit so that the screws will still have something to hold on to.
Attach the new shutter to the wall. Line up the holes in the shutter with the holes in the wall. Screw into place using the old screws. Start with one edge corner, and then move diagonally to the opposite side on the bottom. This holds the shutter in place so you don't have to hold it as long. Screw the screws in tightly, but not so tight as to cause strain on the shutter. Repeat the process until all the shutters that need to be replaced have been replaced.
Tips & Warnings
- In many instances, bugs, wasps, hornets, and bees will make residence behind vinyl shutters. It is very important to watch out for the homes of these creatures so that you do not get stung while replacing the shutters. Place ladder mitts on the side of the ladder so that the ladder does not scratch the side of the house.
- Over-tightening on the screws can cause the vinyl shutters to crack.
