How to Make a Magical Wand
A collector of ceremonial and magical items may prefer to purchase his treasures rather than make them. On the other hand, a practitioner of Wiccan or other Pagan rituals want to make many of her own tools in order to infuse her spells and ceremonies with as much of her energy as possible. The magical--also known as "magickal"--wand is one of the most personal tools a Wiccan can have. While the methods for creating one differ from each Pagan to the next, here is a procedure that you can use whether you follow it to the letter, modify it to suit your preferences or make it the basis of a more intricate process.

1
Go out in nature. Find a spot where there are a lot of trees, and have a clear intention to find the branch that will become your magical wand.
-
2
Scan the ground for branches that are lying about. Keep your awareness open to the one which has a size and shape that you find attractive. The reason this branch calls out to you is because its energy matches yours at this point in your life.

3
Take the branch home and use the knife or your personal athame to peel away the bark. You may leave bits of the bark on the branch in order to add character to what will become your magical wand. Allow the branch to dry out if it is still relatively fresh. The number of days this takes depends on the condition of the branch when you find it.

4
Examine the branch for any evident markings. For instance, you may notice an eye or the outline of an animal or a person. Trace over these with a pencil to create a guideline when carving into the branch to make the shapes more noticeable. Whether or not you observe any markings, you can carve symbols of your choice into the branch. Choose those that you identify with and draw strength from, such as rune and astrological symbols.

5
Use sandpaper to give the branch a smooth finish. Afterwards, decorate the branch with paints, markers or watercolors as you wish. You can even glue crystals to the branch. When you are finished and any glue has dried, coat the branch with varnish as a protective measure.

6
Consecrate the branch. This is the final step before it is ready to be used as a magical wand. You may write the words to be used during your dedication ritual or use pre-written ones that have worked for others (see Resources). Pass the branch over incense smoke as you chant the words you have prepared. The smoke clears the branch of all previous energy to get it ready for your magical work. Depending on what you believe, you can also clear the branch prior to using it as a wand by leaving it under the moonlight after your dedication ceremony.

Tips & Warnings
Some practitioners of magick believe that it is all right when creating a new wand to cut a branch off a tree as long as you ask its permission first. If you personally believe in this, you don't have to limit your search for the ideal branch to those that are already on the ground.
Avoid injury by being careful when using the knife or athame as you create your wand.
