Designing your computer allows you to purchase a computer to your exact specifications. You are in control of what software is placed on the computer as well as all hardware. Some websites allow you to design your computer online and they will build it for you. You can also buy kits and parts separately to design and build the computer yourself.

1. Design your dream computer on paper first. List all specifications, software, and any special designs such as cases or skins.

2. Visit Dell, Gateway, and HP to see if they can build a computer to your specifications. You will be able to choose a base package and add or delete features.

3. Choose the options you want. You will be provided with pricing information with each feature you choose. You can then review your choices and order your customized computer online.

Build Computer From Scratch

1. Make a list of everything you need for your dream computer. This will make shopping much easier.

2. Visit local computer stores to get an idea of prices. Visit online retailers as well such as Best Buy, Tiger Direct, and Zip Zoom Fly to compare part prices.

3. Review your options and purchase all desired parts. Be sure you have all the necessities such as a motherboard, hard drive, CPU, cooling fan, case, memory, power supply, sound and graphics cards, and all required cables.

4. Install parts. The exact order will vary based upon your motherboard and case. Following the directions with each part will help ensure the best possible result.

• Spend some time comparing prices to build the best computer possible at the best price. Have a computer toolkit on-hand if you're building your computer completely from scratch.

• Make certain that all parts will work with your motherboard. If your motherboard only supports 1GB RAM, don't expect to magically make 4GB work.
