How to Download Free Songs Onto an iPod Nano

Many musicians will allow audience members to tape their live shows and share the recordings with others. You can browse a selection of these recordings at the Live Music Archive, which is a service of the Internet Archive. Once you find some songs you like, you can download them to your computer, then transfer them to your iPod Nano for on-the-go listening.

  • iPod Dock Connector to USB 2.0 cable

Instructions

      Connect your iPod Nano to your computer using your iPod Dock Connector to USB 2.0 cable.

      Open your web browser and navigate to the Live Music Archive's listing of recording-friendly bands (see link in Resources section).

      Click on a band's name, then click on "Browse by date" to see a listing of the band's recent shows.

      Click on a show link, then scroll down to the section marked "Audio Files." Choose a song you wish to download, right-click the appropriate link under the heading "64Kbps MP3" and save the file to your computer.

      Open iTunes and select "Add to Library" from the File menu. Navigate to where you saved your audio file and select it.

      Open your iTunes Library, locate your downloaded song and drag it to the iPod Nano icon in the Source list.

Tips & Warnings

  • Artists will play many of the same songs at each of their live shows. If the recordings from a particular show are of poor quality, try another.
