How to Make Button Garland
Children love to craft, and this is a perfect project on a day of inclement weather. It takes very few supplies to make this garland, which can be enjoyed and made for any holiday by changing the color scheme. Pastel colors work well for spring garlands, while a red, white and blue scheme works for the 4th of July, to name a few themes.
Things You'll Need
- Wire-edged ribbon (your choice)
- 12 large,12 medium and 12 small colored buttons
- Hot glue gun and sticks
- Scissors
- Embroidery floss (string or thread are other options)
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Glitter (any color)
Instructions

1
Lay a 36-inch strip of ribbon out flat. Measure and mark every 2 inches. Pinch the ribbon together at every mark, and use a piece of embroidery thread (or string) to tighten the gathered sections of ribbon by tying a knot around each gather. Trim the thread with the scissors. Set the ribbon aside.

2
Thread the floss through the smallest button only. Tie the thread in a knot and trim it with the scissors, leaving a short tail on the ends of the floss on the top side of the button. For the 36-inch length of ribbon, you will need 12 stacks of buttons.

Use a dot of glue from the glue gun to secure three buttons together, forming stacks. Each stack of three buttons will consist of 1 large, 1 medium and 1 small button and will be set with the largest button on the bottom, then the medium and the smallest on top of the stack. It is easier to have all the stacks done instead of trying to glue each button in place on the ribbon gathering.

4
Use the hot glue gun to glue each stack of buttons on top of the gathered ribbon sections. Glue one stack at a time so the glue doesn't harden before you put the stack in place.
-
5
Spread the ribbon over a piece of newspaper or plastic. Add a dab of hot glue to the top button and sprinkle the hot glue with a little glitter for added sparkle.

Tips & Warnings
Use oddly shaped buttons instead of round ones. Use wood buttons for a different look. Divide the length of the ribbon by the amount of buttons in a stack to give you the correct number of buttons needed for the project.
Children should not use a hot glue gun unless supervised.
