How to Hang an American Flag Verticallythumbnail
Certain steps should be followed in order to hang an American flag vertically.

Hanging the U.S. flag must be done respectfully and in accordance with rules covered by the U.S. Flag Code (Public Law 94-344), a joint Congressional resolution.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Flag
    • Rope
    • Clips
      • 1

Make sure the location you select leaves enough room for your flag to fully extend, without wrinkles or sagging.

      • 2

String up a rope across the area where you will hang the flag. Make sure the rope is taut. The American flag must always be hung higher than any other flags on display.

      • 3

Clip the flag to the rope. Make sure the blue/star section of the flag (known as the Union side) is facing the audience's left. Determine this by taking a look at where most of the audience will enter the venue or view the flag. If the flag is hung in the middle of a room, use the main entrance as your guide.

Apply the same logic from step three when hanging the American flag vertically, in the middle of the street. When hanging the flag this way, the flag should be clipped to the rope vertically, and the union section of the flag should face the north (when hung across a street that runs east and west). The union section of the flag should face the east (when hung across a street that runs north and south).

    Tips & Warnings

    • Respect the flag at all times. If you are unsure how to handle the flag in a particular circumstance, call your local veterans' organization.

    • Hanging the flag sloppily is a sign of disrespect. If you choose to hang the American flag, make sure you do so appropriately.

The flag clips are a great idea - I attended an event this past weekend and there were several issues in the way our flag was displayed...where in the flag code does it say what to use when hanging an American flag when not on a staff???
