Instructions

    • 1

Remove the windshield wipers from the windshield. They are usually attached with a screw. You can leave the bottom half of the wipers in place, because they are not attached to the window. Locate the clips holding the molding onto the windshield. Unfasten them and slowly pull away the molding from the window. You may need to use a screwdriver to pry it up in places.

    • 2

Use a putty knife or razor to cut away the old sealant holding the windshield in place. Go carefully as the windshield can easily shatter when pressure is applied. This can take some time, but don't lose patience. Of course, if the glass is already broken then you don't have to worry about it, but you will have to worry about cutting yourself, so watch out!

    • 3

Remove the old windshield by getting inside the car and slowly applying pressure on the windshield. This is made easier if a friend is there to hold the glass on the outside. If you don't care about keeping the glass intact, then you can go faster. Just make sure to have a tarp or cloth in place to catch all the tiny glass pieces.

Clean out the rest of the sealant from the groove that the windshield was laid in. Use a putty knife, screwdriver, or razor. Once clean, apply a new line of sealant to the groove. Use enough to fill the cracks.

    • 5

Lay the new glass in the groove with the sealant. If the sealant oozes out onto the glass, wipe it away with the cloth. Make sure the glass is securely inside the groove of the windshield outline. Re-attach the windshield wipers on the window.

    • 6

Replace the molding over the windshield. This will usually be fairly easy to do; however, it sometimes requires some tapping with a rubber mallet to get it back in place. If the sealant has oozed onto the window a bit it can help the molding stay in place. Let the sealant dry at least 24 hours before applying pressure to the window.

Tips & Warnings

  • After the windshield has been installed, leave the windows rolled down a little for about 48 hours. If this is not done, the pressure from the closing doors can cause the windshield to pop out of place again.

  • Always be careful when handling glass of any kind! It is very easy to get cut.
