How to Open a Dell Laptop Battery

While removing and replacing a battery on a Dell computer machine is a pretty straightforward and simple manner, actually opening the battery case is an entirely different procedure altogether. Not only does the opening of the battery case for the Dell require more steps and more technique, it is a much riskier procedure that should not be attempted by anyone not entirely aware of the possibility of damage to the battery unit.       Save any open files on your computer, then shut off your Dell computer altogether. Be sure to double-check to ensure that your computer is not receiving any power. It is critical that no power is being sent to the unit as you proceed to remove the battery. Make sure the AC adapter is not plugged in and that the power indicator light is not on.

      Locate the battery on your Dell. Depending upon your model, it will be in slightly varying spots. However, the battery should be clearly marked with a symbol and reside on the underside of your laptop.

      Locate the two small latches of your battery, which will be near the connector. Release both latches, which will be located on the left and right sides of the battery. To unlock these two latches, use a tiny flathead screwdriver. Use the flathead screwdriver to loosen the assortment of screws, and then remove each one. Be sure to save each of these tiny screws as you will need them to replace the battery once you are finished. It is advisable to place each screw in a plastic or Ziploc bag for temporary storage during the procedure.

      Remove the battery from the body of the Dell carefully.

      Use a special prying mechanism for this step. This mechanism should be whatever can fit in between the battery covers on the inside without breaking, getting stuck or becoming immobile as a result. This may include any number of household objects like a paper clip. Take this small, thin device and work one or more between the battery covers on each side.

      Slide the paper clips or other small devices along the side to disengage the small latches within the battery cover. Repeat this process on the other side of the battery case and until the two covers are completely separated, then open the battery case.

      Remove the battery cover to access the batteries within.
