Roller shades are a popular and economical way to cover window openings. In addition to being easy to install, they are excellent for blocking out unwanted light. Because of their slick surface, vinyl roller shades are typically quite easy to keep clean and require only occasional dusting. However, if you find your shades are becoming more than lightly soiled, you should consider taking additional steps to keep them looking fresh and clean.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sponge or clean rag
  • Dust cloth or feather duster
  • Bucket
  • Mild cleaning detergent
  • Clean drop cloth or sheet
  • Soft bristled cleaning brush
  • Rubber gloves
  • Dry towel
  • Drying rack or clothes line
  1. Step 1

In a large bucket, mix water and cleaning detergent according to product's instructions.

  2. Step 2

Pull the shades to closed position. Using a cloth or feather duster, lightly wipe the surface of the shades to remove any loose dust or debris.

  3. Step 3

Remove the shades from the window and find an area where you can roll the shades out completely so that the entire surface is exposed. Put a clean drop cloth or blanket over the entire area.

  4. Step 4

Using a soft cloth or sponge, firmly wipe the surface of the shades. Work sequentially, from one end to the other, so that you do not miss any areas.

  5. Step 5

When you are finished cleaning one side, carefully place the shades over drying rack or clothes line until the surface is dry. Once the shades are completely dry on the first side, repeat the same steps on the other side.

  6. Step 6

When both sides are cleaned and dried, carefully roll the shades tightly and re-hang in window.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider cleaning the shades outside. This will provide more space to roll it out and will also utilize the drying power of the sun and wind. Before unrolling the shades, make sure the area you choose is free from debris and other items that might tear or damage the surface of the shades. If you don't have a drop cloth large enough to place under entire surface area of the shades, clean in sections, allowing adequate drying time before rolling up and moving to next area. Test detergent on an inconspicuous area of the shades before cleaning the entire surface to ensure it will not fade or discolor. If you have an area with a stubborn stain, use a soft bristled brush to loosen the stain before cleaning with a cloth or sponge.
  • Keep cleaning products out of reach of children and pets. Be sure to wear rubber gloves if you have sensitive skin or allergies.
