How to File for Unemployment in Indiana

At the end of 2008, CNN posted a listing of the unemployment rates in America. Not surprisingly, Indiana ended the year as the 15th worst state with regard to unemployment. This highly industrial area of the country is driven by the automotive market both locally and in nearby Michigan.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development is the decision making and processing center for unemployment in Indiana. As such, they process complete, accurate claims filed either online or in person. Filing online provides a quick, easy way to initiate an unemployment claim.

Instructions

    • 1

Log on to Indiana's Department of Workforce Development at the third link below to file online. A person desiring to file in person should access the first link below or call 800-891-6499 to locate the nearest office.

    • 2

Register as a first-time user by clicking on the "New User" button. Enter the requested information following specified instructions like the format for birth date and proper length of password. Read and accept the User Agreement, and ensure all information is accurate before clicking "Next." DWD will confirm registration with a "Congratulations" message.

    • 3

Access the Claimant Self-Service portal by entering the user name and password selected and clicking the "Logon" button.

    • 4

Enter the personal information requested and select the closest Workone center desired. Should DWD require a personal appearance, this is the office the claimant will visit. Click the "Next" button to exit each page and access the following page.

    • 5

Select "Submit" when the application is completed to submit the initial unemployment claim to the State of Indiana. DWD will respond with a message indicating the claim was successfully filed.

    • 6

Wait one week from the date of the initial unemployment claim. Log on to DWD again and complete the "claim voucher," answering the questions posed.

    • 7

Review any rejection or request for additional information received either electronically or via mail. Respond if required in the manner instructed.

Tips & Warnings

  • File claim vouchers continuously after the one-week waiting period unless rejected. Contact the DWD with questions at 800-891-6499. Establish a contact/counselor at the local DWD location. Visit the DWD site regularly (at least weekly) to check for updates.

  • Wait until the last date worked has passed before filing the initial claim to avoid rejection. Use the "formal name" appearing on the Social Security Card. If an applicant's formal name is Jonathon J. Smith, they should file under that name, not Jon Smith.
