How to Apply T.E.D. Hose

If you have poor circulation, due to diabetes or other medical conditions, or have recently undergone surgery, your doctor may advise you to wear special anti-embolism stockings, called T.E.D. hose. These stockings are designed to help improve circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots, but getting them on can sometimes be a struggle. Oftentimes, this means T.E.D. hose aren't worn correctly, which will decrease the effectiveness of the stockings, and may lead to vein damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your hand in the stocking, pulling the stocking over your arm and wrist until your hand reaches the foot of the sock. You should be able to see the knuckles of your fingers through the small hole in the foot of the sock.

    • 2

Fold the long part of the T.E.D. hose stocking down over your hand until the stocking is only covering your wrist and hand.

    • 3

Remove your hand from inside the stocking, leaving it folded.

    • 4

Insert your foot (or the patient's foot) into the stocking. Make sure that the small hole in the foot of the sock is on the top of the foot. You should be able to see the place where your toes meet your foot--your toes should NOT poke through the hole.

    • 5

Grasp the end of the T.E.D. hose stocking and pull the long part up over your leg. Check to make sure that the stocking is not twisted on your leg, and feels tolerably comfortable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sprinkling a tiny bit of baby powder into the stocking will help the T.E.D. hose slide on more easily. Don't apply lotion immediately before applying the T.E.D. hose stockings.

  • T.E.D. hose stockings are primarily designed for those who are lying down, not for people who are very physically active. If you walk a lot, talk to your doctor about alternatives in order to avoid damage to your veins. DO NOT wear anti-embolism stockings, or T.E.D. hose, unless you have been advised to do so by a physician or other health care professional.
