Lawnmowers are used to cut grass, but there are also racing competitions for riding lawnmowers. To compete, your lawnmower will have to go faster than 8 miles per hour. There are several fixes you can do to increase the speed of your lawnmower.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine how big the engine pulley is. The engine pulley is also referred to as the motor pulley. It is located on the engine's crankshaft. Change out the pulley for a larger one. An 8-inch may be a good size. A pulley that is at least 3 inches bigger will increase the speed.

  2. Step 2

Remove the transmission pulley. It sits behind the engine pulley and is connected by a bolt. Remove the bolt using a wrench. This allows you to remove the pulley. Get a smaller transmission pulley (about a 5-inch) and connect it. Remember how the pulley looked when you removed it and place it back the same way. Tighten the bolt to keep it in place. The pulley should be at least 2 inches smaller than the original.

  3. Step 3

Remove the governor. This is located on top of the engine and can be done only on riding mowers. To remove it you must unhook it. That is located on the sides. The governor limits the speed of the engine to protect it and provides output power.

  4. Step 4

Take the original wheels off and install larger ones.

  5. Step 5

Change the air filter. Lawnmower air filters will almost always be in a circular compartment on the left side of the engine. Be sure it is clean, or change it completely. Change spark plugs for newer ones, and change the oil.

Tips & Warnings
  • Put the governor back on after racing since the engine can get damaged without it.
