Looking to file your federal and state taxes for free? You have come to the right place. Here I will show you how you can e-file your 2008 federal and state taxes for free.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Email address
  • 2008 W-2
  • 2007 AGI
  1. Step 1
    IRS love you
    IRS love you

I have personally spent about a month looking around for a legitimate tax program that is actually free. Many people are using TurboTax which permits you to file your federal for free but if you want to file your state it approximates $25-30. Then if you want your money direct deposited into your bank account, there is also an extra fee. TurboTax is a great program that is easy to use, but who wants to pay to file their taxes? Get your W-2's ready and also make sure you have set up an email address if you don't already have one.

  2. Step 2
    Free File
    Free File

To file your taxes for free, you must meet certain guidelines for different companies. The IRS has supplied taxpayers with a free file link. Please see the "Resources" section for the direct link to this site. I have personally tried this and unfortunately I make too much money to qualify for free filing.

  3. Step 3
    Tax Calculator
    Tax Calculator

Before you file your taxes, check out the free tax calculator that Tax Slayer offers. You can find the direct link to the tax calculator in the "Resources" section. This calculator comes in handy to help you approximate what your refund could be.

  4. Step 4
    Tax Slayer
    Tax Slayer

In this step I will introduce to you, the software I used this year to file my 2008 taxes. There are many people that do qualify for free federal and state. I used this software because I did not qualify for free taxes, but found the cheapest on the web for filing both federal and state. Open your internet browser and visit Tax Slayer. Also see the "Resources" section for the direct link to this site. Tax Slayer has been in the business for over 30 years.

  5. Step 5
    New member login
    New member login

Once you have arrived at Tax Slayer, set up a new account. This is where you will need your email address. Tax Slayer will expect you to verify your email address and verify your account. Once this is complete, you are ready to file your taxes for free.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's always a good idea to double check.
  • Make sure you have your W-2's before filing.
