Things You'll Need:
- plunger, drain snake, towels, cresent wrench
-
Step 1
The first step is to figure out why the toilet is overflowing. Toilets are designed to maintain a certain water level in each bowl. Even if you leave the water running and the toilet is draining properly the water level in the bowl will stay at a certain depth.
-
Step 2
Take the plunger and put it into the toilet making sure to form a suction around the drain hole. By pushing the plunger in you will know if you have proper suction. Now push and pull the plunger to see if you can get the toilet to drain or if whatever is clogging the toilet comes back into the bowl.
-
Step 3
If the plunger does not relieve the problem take a drain snake preferably twenty feet of more and run it into the bowl through the pipes. Once you have reached the end of the snake pull it back through to see if you have snagged anything. Normaly you this will loosen anything clogging the drain.
-
Step 4
If this does not work it is time to call a plumber you may have a septic blockage or sewer blockage.

on 1/28/2009 Always better to try and fix it yourself before you have to call a plumber and get charged $60!
