As a dancer, I have lived, heard and observed the difficulties involving skill sharpening. The steps are short and simple

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • passion. You wont get anywhere without it. people who live, eat, sleep and breathe dance are those that will succeed
  • available mentors
  • a little spending money for charging classes
  1. Step 1

Study other forms of dance. This is the number one thing hip hop dancers dont want to do. Ballet and Modern dance is the base for hip hop. Very rarely do you meet accomplished hip hop dancers who have never taken a high level Ballet and Modern coarse.

If you do meet the rare few, you'll notice technically they are incorrect with a lot of their movements and tend to injure themselves faster. They also have a harder time listening to direction and working together with other people.

  2. Step 2

Find other dance enthusiasts. Join local email lists that tell you of upcoming shows. Learning new and innovative movement from local performances is a must for ANY dancer. This is how you network yourself. Donate some time to help out behind the scenes of local groups. take classes and make friends with the founders. If they are good people who see a dancer in need, they will give you guidance when asked for it.

  3. Step 3

Always have 20 bucks on hand when going to a dance class. The class may be free, but higher level classes usually cost anywhere from 5-20 dollars per class. See if the teacher can do a payment plan if you cannot get funds steadily available. Always pay cash! unless its a more corporate studio type setting, cash will be the only way to purchase a class.

Tips & Warnings
  • Know that you wont be great right away. There will be a lot of people who will always be better than you. Just remember that there are people who are better than THEM! Find your own style of dancing and show what you've got to work with with pride!
  • Be careful with your body. I am a young dancer with multiple life long injuries. A very sane version of Paula Abdul if you will...
