Feeding a few growing snakes can be expensive. Breeding your own mice can save you a bundle.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 10 gallon aquarium with lid
  • Substrate
  • Food
  • Mice
  • Water bottle appropriate for an aquarium
  1. Step 1

Place substrate and water bottle in aquarium. Substrate can be any commercial substrate intended for use with small animals. I usually use aspen bedding because I buy it for my snakes anyway. Mice stink, to minimize the smell add vanilla extract to their water.

  2. Step 2

Choose mice. I recommend adult mice so you can start having babies sooner. Use only one male per cage with two to four females. More than one male will cause fighting and a terrible smell caused by the males musking to mark their territory.

  3. Step 3

Feed and water the mice daily. Feed as much as they will eat. For breeding, mice need a high fat diet. I recommend rabbit food, corn. or cheap dog food mixed with black sunflower seeds.

  4. Step 4

Clean cage weekly. Keep aquarium away from other pets (especially cats and dogs) and avoid handling the babies. If mice feel threatened they will eat their babies.
