A modern family tree
A modern family tree

Mapping out your genealogy can be challenging, but you can really learn a considerable amount about your lineage. A family tree is also a great visual to explain to children the family history. There are several possible ways to make a family tree- this is just one.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • Pen
  1. Step 1

Start with the top of your tree. This is the oldest known ancestor in your family lineage. Write their name at the top of your paper. Write their spouse's name beside them. Connect the two with a bracket. You can add birth and death dates below each name if you know them.

  2. Step 2

Underneath the oldest ancestor's name write each child's name. Draw a line connecting them to their parents. Again write each spouse's name beside each child.

  3. Step 3

Continue down, filling in each child and spouse until you reach the youngest generation. Fill in as much as you know about each person- even if you don't know their name or spouse. You can place an X in unknown information.
