How to Create an RPG with RPG Maker VX

This is instruction on how to begin creating an RPG with RPG Maker VX.

A common question on RPG creation is how to begin the game. Most people can figure out how to click "play" and have the game instantly load without any sort of opening story or style. This lesson will teach how to design a foundation with room to expand.

This lesson will go over:
-Setting up the game start
-Link Maps
-Create doors with effects

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PC with 1.0GHz Intel(R) Pentium(R) III equivalent or higher processor
  • At least 256MB of system RAM
  • 1024x768 or better video resolution
  • 100MB available hard disk space
  • RPG Maker VX(30 days demo or Full Licensed)
  1. Step 1

    Start a new project and title it. Left-click OK.

  2. Step 2

    Right-click map001 and left-click Map Properties.

  3. Step 3

    Name Map001, and size to 17W 13H. Left-click OK.

  4. Step 4

    Flood Fill map tiles with the black chip.

  5. Step 5

    Left-click Database and select the Actor tab.

  6. Step 6

    Change Character graphic to None. Left-click OK.

  7. Step 7

    Create a new Map002, name it and size to 17W 13H. Left-click OK.

  8. Step 8

    Draw the map with at least one building.

  9. Step 9

    Create a new Map003, name it and size to 17W 13H. Draw the building interior. Left-click OK.

  10. Step 10

    Go back to Map001 and create a new event.
    Set the event trigger to Autorun.
    Create a new Event Command:
    Transfer player to Map002(the one with a building exterior).

  11. Step 11

    Create a new Event Command:
    Change actor graphic back.

  12. Step 12

    Fine tune this event and add text for a story presentation or credits.
    This even can also control events, switches, variables, etc-- for additional, optional, gameplay elements. Left-Click OK.

  13. Step 13

    Text(story/credits) will appear when staring a new game.
    The actor will not appear yet.

  14. Step 14

    The actor will appear on map002 right after the opening story/credits are complete.

  15. Step 15

    Create a new event on Map002 with a door graphic.

  16. Step 16

    Uncheck all animation options. Set trigger to Player Touch.
    Create a new Event Command:
    Set Move Route - This event(wait for competion) Play sound effect Open1, turn left, wait 30, turn right, wait 30, turn up, wait 30.
    Create a new Event Command:
    Transfer player to Map003(building inerior) facing up.
    Create a new Event Command:
    Play sound effect Open2
    Create a new Event Command:
    Set move Route - Player(wait for completion) 1 Step Forward.
    Left-click OK.

  17. Step 17

    Go to Map003(building interior)
    Create a new event at the doorway.
    Create a new Event Command:
    Play sound effect Open1
    Create a new Event Command:
    Transfer player to Map002(building exterior) just outside the door, facing down.
    Create a new Event Command:
    Play sound effect Open2
    Left-click OK.

  18. Step 18

    Copy the event and paste it in any open spaces that represent the doorway.

  19. Step 19

    Play test the project and test each element. If something doesnt work, go over the steps again.
