  1. Step 1

Make your own private space. It doesn't have to be a place that's completely shut-off from the rest of the world. Get inside your car, a bathroom stall, a phone booth, or a vacant room. Find a place where you can be alone in the midst of the crowd and start relaxing and reassuring yourself.

  2. Step 2

Take a deep breath. Those who suffer from anxiety attacks say they hyperventilate and feel their heart beating fast. It's up to you to slow it down. Take deep breaths to cope with the shortness of breath. Fast, shallow breathing is what' causes the hyperventilation and the increased heart rate.

  3. Step 3

Find support. If none of your family or friends are with you, call one up. Talk to them and tell them about the panic attack you're currently feeling. Just listening to a friend or a loved-one's voice can be soothing. If you're with a friend, hold their hand. Their mere presence can be reassuring enough to tell you nothing bad is going to happen.

  • It is best to be prepared for random anxiety or panic attacks because you'll never know where it would hit you. Keep in mind that if you continue practicing how to control your reaction to anxiety attacks, you might just be able to beat your anxiety disorder for the long haul.
