Write a Love Poem

Write a love poem as a thoughtful, unique, romantic gift. You can impress your sweetheart with your own original poetry. Learn to write your first romantic poem, or improve your poetry skills.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Memories, Time, Creativity
  1. Step 1

Write a list of good memories you have had with your sweetheart. Include special places and feelings your remember. Add details including sights, sounds, smells, feelings, tastes. Decide which of these memories should be mentioned in the poem.

  2. Step 2

Write a list of good qualities about your lover. Include things that you admire, turn you on, or elicit other feelings. Make the list descriptive as in step 1. Use similes and metaphors to describe your love or his/her qualities. Example: "Her lips take me on a first class flight to euphoria"

  3. Step 3

Look for a theme in your lists of memories and qualities. Circle or highlight the most important items you have written. This will probably be developed from one of your metaphors.

  4. Step 4

Organize and get started. Place descriptive words and phrases at the beginning of your poem to give your romantic poem a setting. Then place the words and descriptions that say what you want to say after you have set the stage. This will be sure to impress and show thoughtfulness.

  5. Step 5

Revise and edit. If possible get a friend to help you. Look for parts that may be unclear, vague, or boring. Spice up these parts with more descriptive words and metaphors. This is where you may be able to tailor the poem toward some things that your sweetheart likes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid Clichés such as "I love you just the way you are"
  • Avoid using the word "Love" at all
  • Describe Love
  • Think of a great way to present your poem
  • Don't give up easily, just take a break and come back fresh later
  • Watch out for offensive metaphors that could be misinterpreted
