Your driving around many cars in the snow and every time you hit your brakes you slide....and almost hit the last one. I'll show you how to avoid it

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nerves
  1. Step 1

People call me crazy when I drive on snow when I pass people all over the place and I am an accident looking for a place to happen. 40 years drivinc and NO winter accidents shows them how wrong they are. You have heard no doubt of the phrase defensive driving. Most people do not practice this. I do in more ways than you can count. Your driving in the snow. Cars all around.

  2. Step 2

The general rule of thumb is one second for every 10 miles an hour distance between you and the other car. Next time your driving down the road following someone, pick a sign in the road and count how many seconds it takes for that sign to go from the back of their car to the front of yours. If your doing 60, it better take 6 seconds. If it is shorter, slow down till you get it. This is just standard driving.

  3. Step 3

Say the car in front of you has a blow out. Leaving that distance not only provides greater stooping ability but also an escape route should something come your way. Now let's get tricky, put SNOW under your tires and the guy just spun out!! In snow, rain, and ice of coarse, room is everything so let's not go for the 6 second rule, let's go for the 9 second rule. Yes, put some more space between you.

  4. Step 4

He then does the unexpected and goes into a wipe out. Tap your brakes to feel for traction. If you have it, not only do you slow down of coarse, you look at the area to the direction opposite the path he is taking and aim that way, if you don't have traction, put it in neutral and knock out ALL your push power and then follow the above. You'll be amazed how fast you stop and still maintain control.
